In Appreciation of Our Founder – Øystein Baltzersen
Øystein Baltzersen graduated with a master’s degree in physical electronics from the University of Trondheim in 1982. He began his career as research assistant at the university, and soon joined IKU, the Continental Shelf Institute, where he contributed to mapping, drilling, and technology R&D projects on the Norwegian continental shelf. His early work in seabed mapping, shallow seismic surveys, and offshore navigation laid the foundation for his technical expertise.
Motivated by a passion for practical solutions, Øystein earned a PhD in petroleum production in 1994, focusing on inspection and monitoring of flexible pipelines. In 1996, he co-founded Sensorlink with his PhD advisor, Professor Sigbjørn Sangesland, with a vision to turn research into real-world industrial applications.
Under his leadership, Sensorlink developed groundbreaking technologies, including the control system for SmartPlug® pipeline pressure isolation tool, the ULTRAMONIT subsea monitoring system, and the SWARM topside sensor. His work has had a lasting impact on the pipeline industry and shaped Sensorlink’s culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. Known for his curiosity, persistence, and hands-on approach, Øystein inspired colleagues and partners alike.
After nearly three decades in Sensorlink, Øystein retired in May 2025, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a company culture built on excellence and practical problem-solving.
